This time I saw Shkodra with different eyes. The city’s diversity of people and cultural mix stood out strongly, and over the weekend the lively atmosphere of parties gave it an energetic spirit. What touched me most, however, were the Catholic churches scattered around the city. Stepping into them gave me a profound sense of spirituality and peace, balancing the vibrant social scene outside. Reviews we read of Shkoder said it's a university town with lots of biking. Not sure what those reviewers were writing about, but there weren't many bike friendly areas and the town was not as vibrant as we expected. We did spend some time in the Shiroka area on the lake a 10 minute or so drive from Shkoder and that was very nice - good restaurants and lake activities. Shkoder is a lovely city with great views, food and nice accommodation facilities. It's a safe place for families and youths with lots of activities around. They totally showcase Albanian hospitality with their kindness and friendliness. Unfortunately, we got food poisoning (not from their restaurant), and they brought us bananas, yoghurt, water and lemon sodas. Luckily, we'd recovered by our 2nd morning and were able to enjoy their fantastic breakfast. Sad we missed one as it was definitely the best we'd had in Albania! The food is delicious, there’s free parking and it’s just a quick walk to the old town. The staff were very helpful, the room was comfortable and we booked a day trip to Shala river effortlessly through them. The room was cool in the heat and the courtyard was blissfully airy. The room was big, very comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. Joseph and his wife were very welcoming and were so helpful with all our questions. We wanted to hire a car so he brought my husband to a local car rental place close by. Breakfast was included and we got the best croissants in Albania! He was a pastry chef in France for many years. I used it as a base to be able to explore the north of Albania. The hotel was easy to find, down a dead end road so it was quiet. With a gated parking area it felt secure. It was family run and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. It was great to have a small fridge in the room, which was huge. Good wifi and a lovely shower too!
