Deep into the interior of Para, on the map Maraba looks somewhat uninspiring: we were headed there only because it was a convenient stop on the Vale railway passenger train route. But we really enjoyed our stay. A comfortable hotel (the Sao Bento). Several very good restaurants. An interesting old town and riverside promenade along the Rio Tocatins. Best of all, jaguar encounters at the Fundacao Zoologico In the forest south of town.
Well off the tourist trail, Maraba is a relaxed, mostly modern city deep into the state of Para on the Rio Tocatins, with an interesting and attractive old port area. Several interesting sights, and a rainforest wild animal rehabilitation park south of the city with jaguars, ocelots, tapirs anteater etc. Vale's efficient and reliable Ferrovia Carajas runs passenger trains from Sao Luis to Maraba 3 times a week.
