DenmarkThe hostel is well-run by Lars, who gave us a warm welcome upon arrival. The 12-bed dorms are actually split into two parts with 6 beds each which provided a more private and quiet experience than expected. With no electricity, no phone reception, and only 1 hour wifi per day, the hostel forces you to disconnect and instead enjoy the nature, the sauna, and each others' company. With only around 20km to Lake Louise, it is the ideal base for exploring some of the highlights in Banff.

Lake Louise attracts thousands of visitors who have to be managed; it's overshadowed by the mass of the fairmont Chateau hotel. Louise is one of hundreds of vividly coloured, turquoise lakes in the Alberta Rockies. If you want beauty with a little peace and quiet look elsewhere. Emerald lake, half an hour away from Louise, is beautiful ad attracts fewer visitors. Peyto lake, see photo, on the Icefield Parkway is perhaps the most dramatic (hint: don't turn right into the parking but continue straight on to the upper parking and avoid a strenuous climb uphill on foot). Accommodation at Lake Loise is expensive. Consider staying in Banff or Golden and driving into the area. I paid nearly $800 per night expecting a quiet, nature-focused stay, as advertised on the hotel’s website. Instead, I was first given a noisy room, and then moved to another that smelled strongly of bleach and had a broken window. Despite my allergy, no alternative room was offered. The bleach fumes caused severe headaches that required painkillers, and by the second day, ants had entered the room. The Lake access can be difficult due to the massive crowds Lake Louise, such that hundreds of people walk 1-2 miles uphill just to get to the lake, because parking lot is full by 8:00 AM. As someone who visited Lake Louise in 2007 the experience was different at that time we could drive right up to the hotel and that makes it a difficult for people with disabilities. We come to Lake Louise evey year for a few days of downhill skiing with friends. We love to ski at Lake Louise, especially when the weather is clear, the views are spectacular! We stay at the HI hostel in Lake Louise which has good facilities, and a great location.Guest review byHeleneCanada

We loved sitting out by the campfire, reading in our room with the doors open and cooking dinner on the BBQ. It was such an easy 15 minute drive to Lake Louise too. We were lucky enough to see a moose cow with her calf in the forest on our drive in.
