The Parks Canada staff were incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Many were "re-enactors" who stuck to their role and gave interesting information about how they and others lived and how different roles were viewed.
We found that the staff brought the stones to life. We spent six hours there and could have spent more, but mainly because we learned so much from talking to staff that when we walked around we had a sense of the life at the time.
We would certainly recommend that everyone take the walking tour offered by Parks Canada. It is like the difference between watching a foreign language movie with and without an interpreter. You see the images in both cases, but with the "interpreter" you understand what they mean.

Louisbourg is a small oceanside town with LOTS of history and beauty. Be sure to visit the Lighthouse on the other side of the harbour. The scenic walking trail (easy walking) is incredible. Just parking at the trailhead and getting out to view the lighthouse is beautiful.
And of course, the Fortress of Louisbourg is must do !

The obvious best part of Louisbourg is seeing the Fortress.
The obvious best part of Louisbourg is seeing the Fortress. You can easily spend 4 hours or more in the Park and you can add more time if you want to walk along some of the trails and see some of the outer fortifications. The re-enactors and guides are knowledgeable and eager to greet you. Beyond the Fortress, there is the lighthouse (with a beautiful, easy walk) and Glace Bay is an easy drive.

After 32 years since my last visit, I was saddened to find that the bustling daily life and historical scenes of my past recollected experience were no longer present (lots of costumed interpreters, horses and carts, auctions, active village programs throughout the day, period meals served in the food purveyor spaces). The life and character of this historical fortress apparently died a COVID death as very few individuals were around to bring to life the settlement in its heyday. Barely any animals to be seen and lots of closed buildings. Our highlight was the bakery and buying fresh bread. Unfortunately a disappointment but hopefully some federal funding can inject new life into this excellent site in the near future.

The Fortress is an amazing Canadian landmark accomplishment, a historical treasurer! We took 2 tours, the first was a Solider in period dress who shared his life story, and actually shot his rifle to demonstrate. He then escorted us to one of the homes, where we were met by a woman in period dress who shared life in the household and the history of homemade hot chocolate which she had prepared for us. We also booked a private tour; our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the history of the Louisbourg fortress! Every building we entered had amazing people in period dress, sharing stories of life at that time...this experience is where history truly comes to life. Thank you Canada!

The Louisbourg Heritage House really is as pretty as the photographs, well and thoughtfully furnished in period specific furniture and art. We found most everything to be fresh and functional despite the age.
Breakfast was a pleasant surprise. We were presented with a fresh fruit crepe, sausages and fresh cheddar scones. The crepe was delicious and exactly the right portion to start the day. The server was a very friendly Cape Bretoner who sent us on our way with the rest of the fresh scones for lunch. Super thoughtful.

Amazing stay! Beautiful location - in good weather, & bad, it did not disappoint. The owners Colin & Justin are very hands on & visible. Extremely welcoming & work very hard to ensure their guests have a great stay. They are very ably assisted on reception by the charming Mrs Macdonald. Another great staff member is Luke J. - a young man who responded with alacrity.
The rooms are beautifully decorated - tasteful, blissfully comfortable and immaculate.
We enjoyed good food & drinks & Saturday night music was a bonus.

Very comfortable stay at the centre of the village. We had a nice walk round the harbour and a good meal at the cafe nearby. The breakfast was home cooked and very good; generous with the coffee. We did not meet anyone in the evening but very friendly and welcoming in the morning.

The staff were most accommodating. The location to Louisbourg Fortress was very good. There was great dinner dining in the area. And the Inn itself was like being transported back in time - such a delightful experience.
