Switzerland Through the Ages
At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.

A great base to have when exploring Switzerland. Basel is full of history and has one of the best local history museums I've seen. One could spend the whole day in the Basel Historical Museum. From the Bronze Age to modern times, this place has it. Various restaurants and all types of shopping dot the Old Town area. The transportation system(city trams and trains) is on time and efficient. Didn't really know what to expect in Basel but really enjoyed our stay. It is bigger than I expected but the transport network is really efficient and with the Basel card it is free. The place we enjoyed the most was the Zoo - spent all day there - highly recommend it (and it is half price entry with the Basel card). Getting around Basel was very easy. The hotel gave us a free transport card. The tram stopped just outside the hotel. The restaurant at this hotel was great and you will need to go up to the Bar Rouge at the top of the building. (31st floor ) Other restaurants within walking distance. So many lovely places to visit.
