Jianshui is a little-known gem, and this guesthouse is an amazing place to experience it. As others have said, the couple running the guesthouse—which is also their home—are incredibly welcoming. The room was clean, spacious, comfortable, and had everything we needed. We felt right at home and can’t wait to go back.

The Inn is inside the Old town in an ideal location, as one can walk everywhere. The hotel is a reconstructed traditional old home with inner lovely courtyard, a lovely wood tea table to welcome guests. We had a family room with two large rooms, one with two very comfortable double beds, the other a lounge. The air-conditioning works very well. The equipment is all new and good quality, with a great bathroom with good water pressure. Our room was very quiet, like the rest, overlooking the beautiful tiled roofs of Jianshui old houses. If you like Chinese breakfast then the host will gladly prepare the soups for you, but if like Western breakfast there is a pastry shop about 150 meters away where you can buy yoghurts, muesli, cakes and eat them in the inner garden downstairs. All can be put in the fridge in the kitchen. Our host Shen Ang is unbelievably hospitable and knowledgeable. He helped us discover the city and drove us to see the double Dragon Bridge, the old French train station, the new Jianshui city and took us to the train station, he is amazing. Only 10 minutes away, past the pastry shop, is the famous city gate Chao Yang, with access to the main pedestrian boulevard by which we accessed all the historic sites in Jianshui: the Confucius Temple, the Family Zhu Gardens with the over 40 villas where this local dynasty lived.

Defintely the prettiest small city of Southern Yunnan!

Defintely the prettiest small city of Southern Yunnan! Worth the detour from other parts of China for it is so authentic. Rather than knock down and rebuild somehow it has survived this tendency for it is a living well organised city, yet is well maintained museum, well worth a visit. Jianshui has retained, by intelligent planning, its character, its old buildings, the links to it's agricultural country side, it's history, with a warmth that is tanglible, with many coffee shops and interesting facades and architecture.

The bus ride to the Swallow's Cave was interesting and it followed the smaller roads. The Confucian Temple was beautiful. There were many Chinese tourists in the old city but we did not see any foreigners. With few foreigners, all the merchants and restaurant workers were delighted and intrigued to serve us. There were many old buildings along the main road in the old city and many temples. The headquarters for administering the National Government exam during Qing dynasty china has been turned into a very interesting and informative museum. Swallow's cave and the surrounding tropical garden, was very impressive and beautiful. We ate a stewed chicken the first night. While the chick stews with vegetables at your table, corn bread cooks on the rim of the wok. The view from the main city gate across a lake to the mountains is sweet.
