Every aspect of this little gem, situated in the Costa Rican jungle just steps from the Pacific, was amazing. We enjoyed its romantic setting, pretty infinity pool set in a jungle garden, stellar hosts--and chefs!--cleanliness and welcoming vibes, as well as their delicious complimentary breakfasts and other gourmet meals which were available to buy. Our hosts were super helpful and accessible. The rooms are equipped to cook for yourself, and there's a small market about a 15 minute walk up the road--though you'd be missing out on the hotels very good and very reasonable restaurant. The area hasn't become another "Nosara/Miami/Hawaii"--not yet anyway--so come now and enjoy the food, the uncrowded beach, the infinity pool, birding and the howler monkeys.

Hotel Hibiscus is a great place to stay! Even if the rooms are very simple, the keyfactors match totally. Very comfortable and super clean bed, great internet which offers you wifi at the beach, super well working Airconditioner and Van, and a big fridge. Christian, the owner, is super friendly and helpful and you have just 50steps to the beach!

Soul Shine is the best accommodation choice in the Playa Avellanas area. The cabinas are spacious and clean with comfortable beds, good WiFi, air conditioning and a mini-fridge. The pool is a gorgeous place to relax and the grounds are laden with lush tropical flowers and vegetation. The location is amazing - Avellanas beach is a short walk away, and so are many great restaurants, including Barumis (burgers), Lola’s, La Parruja, and La Esquina, a community space with tacos, sushi, cocktails and other tasty food (visit the public market there on Friday nights for local vendors and live music). You can also walk next door and get some gelato! Owners Yael and Roee are the ultimate hosts and will ensure your stay is as perfect as possible. You really are part of the family when you’re here. And a Soul Shine review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning their delicious brunch! This place serves up some of the best food you’ll find in the area – even in all of Costa Rica. Authentic menu items such as shakshuka, Gypsy King, falafels and avocado toast are all served hot and fresh with crispy salad and yummy tapas on the side. The fresh bread is served warm and melts in your mouth! Soul Shine has everything you need for a perfect stay in the Playa Avellanas/Playa Negra area – comfortable rooms, attentive hosts, amazing food and close to the beach and restaurants. Our family of four fell in love with this place. We didn't want to leave this small piece of paradise. Comfy beds, cosy spaces, the pool is out of this world. Close to the beach and places to grab a bite. Can't wait to go back in January!!

We loved our stay at Mikado Lodge! It is an incredible property in the middle of the jungle. The room and deck were lovely as you feel like you are in the tree canopy with the sounds of howler monkeys, cicadas, and views of deer and so many species of birds. Bring your binoculars! We enjoyed the pool time, the little trail on site, and the troup of monkeys that came swinging through the trees through in the morning. Aside from the beauty of the nature, everything is just so polished and well-taken care of. It is clear that a lot of thought and time has gone into the design and care of this boutique hotel. The owner, Lolo, was a gracious and accommodating host. She whipped up some delicious meals and was so sweet with our one year old. Playa Avellana is close by so you can go from jungle to beach in about 15 minutes! We would definitely stay there again.

    Very nice and accessible beach.

    Very nice and accessible beach. Any kind of vehicle can get there easily. You don't need 4WD transportation. Beach is still very natural and unspoiled and I hope it remains that way for long time. No large hotels or multi-story apartments ... just natural beach landscape. Residents have implemented a sea turtle protection program as some of these lovely creatures get there to lay their eggs during specific times of the year.

    We loved the quiet area, and the beach; walked everywhere, didn't need a car. Food was great at many local restaurants, including Guacamaya, Tata's (breakfast), Tatanka's, Mundo Milo and the Tides. Kayaked in the mangroves and visited the local turtle sanctuary.
