A 7000 Year Old Mediterranean Jewel
Embraced by the sandy Costa Blanca beaches and caressed by the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Alicante has a rich heritage built over thousands of years. Alacant (as it's known in Valencian) has a deep history ranging from the first tribes that arrived at the slopes of Mount Benacantil to Greeks, Romans and Moors. Nowadays, this modern city boasts a bustling harbour, great Spanish nightlife, charming old streets and modern beach resorts.
Overlooking the city from the top of Mount Benacantil, the Castle of Santa Barbara was built in the 9th century during Islamic rule. Cascading down the slopes towards the city centre, L'Ereta Park has terraced levels that offer stunning panoramic views of the city. The remains of the ancient Roman town of Lucentum are also just a few kilometres away.
Barrio de la Santa Cruz is the historic quarter, featuring narrow streets, old houses and cobbled steps. Framed by palm trees and covered with a snaking pattern of white, red and blue tiles, the Explanada de Espana is considered one of Spain’s most beautiful promenades.

We found it to be a very friendly city. Great for walking round. Public transport is cheap and easy to find. A wide variety of places to eat & drink. We booked a walking tour to get some sense of geography of the city and all also to learn about its history and customs. You HAVE to have internet connectivity ALL THE TIME - Wifi...
You HAVE to have internet connectivity ALL THE TIME - Wifi is not freely available. Alicante is not just a town. Its a city. Its big. Its busy. And you need to ensure you know your way around or have internet maps on hand. We tried to navigate from research and failed miserably. Luggage lockers are available all over - BUT - you need your own wifi to connect. On the door it will read: Free Wifi - but its not avaiable. If anyone travels from South Africa: there is no way you are prepared for the sise of Spanish towns - they are all cities to us in sise. (Sorry for the spelling error but my laptop refuse to type the last letter of the alphabet today). Alicante is beautiful, friendly, and has everything you can possibly want. Not all busdrivers are friendly and some really do not favour tourists, so blend in as best as possible. Alicante combines the best of a beach holiday with a city break. The shorefront is very attractive with lots of restaurants to choose from. Go a little further back and there a variety of other busy restaurants and bars. There are two castles you can visit view great views of the coast and city. There is also an excellent main shopping area for the big shops. Go a little further back and you won't feel like you are in a tourist town at all. The people are all friendly and helpful. It's a bit noisy, but it's worth staying here and checking out all the cool stuff around. There's a great selection of restaurants, a beautiful waterfront, and lots of shops.
