It's a comfortable, reasonably priced hotel in a great position, right on the Tyne. There is plenty of parking and a choice of pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk. The staff were very helpful. The hotel's restaurant and bar are fine if you fancy a night in. There is quite a bit of sightseeing nearby and the centre of town is within walking distance.

The local co-op was well stocked and not far away for snacks and pop, and a I took the opportunity to seek guidance from a fellow shopper who steered us to the Pack Horse pub, https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/pubs/tyne-and-wear/pack-horse/ which gave us a good dinner. We didn't have time to visit Gibside on this trip, but I have been before, the chapel and gardens are well worth as visit. John tells me there is an active live music scene with open mic nights, and directed us to a car boot sale at Blaydon RFC on Sunday morning Crow Trees Ground, Hexham Rd, Swalwell, Newcastle upon Tyne NE16 3BN
