I feel sorry for the town council.
I feel sorry for the town council. Penrith is very much a "gateway to the Lake District" so it gets very busy, especially in the middle of summer and coping with demands for accessibility and parking in a very old town is always going to be a problem. It really is a lovely town but this country has an aging population and I suggest that Penrith council really needs to think hard about the needs of it's aging residents and disabled visitors. There's a VERY sparse amount of parking dedicated to disabled travellers; the pavements are uneven and many are not wide enough to cope with a wheelchair. We stayed at and ate at Foundry 34 and the nearby chippie. Foundry 34 was trying to appeal to a younger crowd and although the food was fine, I felt it was expensive. I know Penrith well, I used to live and work here and its always a pleasure to return. It's a great little town with lots of great places to stay and eat, additionally the Lakes are on the doorstep and the locals are sooooo friendly. First time in Lake District and it is very pretty although we found it very expensive for everything: the boat trip, parking, ice creams, eating out and even charging for public toilets. The countryside around Penrith is beautiful.
The countryside around Penrith is beautiful. This is one of the less touristy parts of the Lakes, but only because it has fewer high peaks, not that it is any less attractive. It is therefore quieter. Lowther is worth visiting, Asham is a lovely little town, very picturesque, Shap Abbey has sat almost hidden in a fold of the landscape since the 13 th century, Hawswater, Ullswater, the High Street ridge, the CTC cycleway, there is a lot to see and do.Guest review byCharlesUnited Kingdom

The room was warm and clean, the bed was comfortable and it was quiet at night. There were a number of breakfast options, and the food was of a good quality and well cooked. The location is excellent, with a private parking area at the rear of the property. I could walk into the town centre in a few minutes and it was ideally suited to visit Potfest. Ample parking at rear of the hotel, and good-sized room. Very hearty and filling breakfast, and friendly and helpful staff on hand.
