So much to see. Great eating places. Amazed at how tourist friendly. Ate at the French restaurant Roux on the Saturday night. Great 2 course set menus for £20.95. Overall I found St. Albans disappointing. Yes, the Cathederal is wonderful and the Roman remains worth a visit but the town itself was nowhere near as charming as I had anticipated. I was expecting an interesting mediaeval town of higgly piggly streets but these were very limited. Pubs were ordinary for the most part, the Mermaid was the hands down winner. We loved the Roman remains and Museum and really enjoyed visiting the Cathedral, which was free and very welcoming. We spent a very interesting wet afternoon at the preserved Signal Box (my husband is a rail enthusiast!) and also at the De Haviland museum just the other side of the motorway. Corridors and general areas were also good apart from the dining area which could have benefitted from some cleaning of the carpet. There was a very good choice of food and drinks for breakfast and, overall, this was very good except that the hot food tended to be a little on the cool side, particularly the scrambled eggs which were stone cold.
