England Through The Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

York is a great city, and people very friendly. Lots to see and do. Our trip was mainly for Christmas shopping, there is plenty of shops to browse. Interesting historical city.
Interesting historical city. York Minster is a must for anyone visiting. The shambles with its winding streets and late medieval houses is full of character and buzz . These are my two top places to see. However the overall character of the city is wonderful.Guest review byPaulineIreland - 10.0

Beautiful city, lots to do and see.We found d a fabulous Turkish restaurant Capadokya 50. Outstanding food and very reasonable pricing. The national railway museum was a terrific surprise. There is so much to do in York!
There is so much to do in York! We were there for a wedding in the museum gardens but managed to do some walking around town! Some great places we ate: Fat Hippo - delish burgers and different fries (don't get the fried pickles unless you like them soggy!) Bettys tea rooms - for afternoon tea but we also had breakfast - scrambled egg bacon and english muffin sooo filling and cooked to perfection! For the amount of people in this city and tourism alike the people behind the place keep it very clean 10 out of 10 .the biggest let down for the tourism is the lack of loos when you put on a big show it would make sense to even have people pay for a nip to a porta loo so they don't feel to mutch discomfort on there stay the boat trips are good value and so is the bus serviceGuest review byHanibalised
