The town itself isn't much to write home about, but has all the facilities needed. The castle is fantastic and definitely worth a visit. Beautifully restored with fantastic photo ops. There's a lot to see in the fortress although it has been quite heavily restored with some totally new buildings. Nothing else in Akhaltsikhe itself but it's a good base for Varzia cave city and Sapara Monastery - always best to arrive early everywhere and you often have the place to yourself (not Varzia, too popular). We made a last minute change to our travel plans to come to Akhaltsikhe for 1 night. 1 night us definitely not enough, 2 nights would have been better to fit in a a slow paced tour of vardzia (2-3 hours recommended, plus 2 hours total driving time). Very impressive fortress/castle of IX century, rebuilt in XII century. However, in my opinion, some parts of the reconstruction of 2012 doesn't fit well with old structures and makes to desire much more. Overall, it is worth to visit it. But, if you are in Akhaltsikhe, you are simply OBLIGUED to visit Vardzia caves (1 hour away). It will leave you astonished!!! And also Saro megaliths and ruins of 2nd millennium BC (45 min away)... I've stayed at this lovely place before and its forever my go-to place when traveling in that part of Georgia. The owners are very friendly and very helpful - also great people to chat with! It's very close to the fortress. The room is very quiet and I had a great night sleep. Finally last but not the least - I could park my motorcycle in their private courtyard which is always very welcome. It was perfectly safe there.
