Firostefani was a good choice of Santorini location for me.
Firostefani was a good choice of Santorini location for me. Even at the end of the season, the main town of Fira was overcrowded with cruise ship visitors every day, and had some very high prices in the shops and restaurants. Firostefani is only a mile from Fira centre with good communications but is less crowded and (slightly) less expensive. There are plenty of restaurants in Firostefani, the two I liked best were Onar and Aktaion. Also there was a good, reasonably priced take-away called Why Not. Firostefani (and many areas of Santorini) has small mini-markets but no good supermarket. Anyone self-catering would find food shopping expensive and with limited choices. The small village streets were rustic and lined with friendly shop keepers. A relaxed and friendly inviting people. Hill top views are simply amazing and make fantastic photos. The only issue is when the cruise ships arrive. Streets become over run by time poor travellers, checking their watches and posing for pictures along the narrow pathways leading from the town back to our appartments. Best location in Santorini you can get just in the the heart right in between Thira and Imerovigli - 10-15mins walk in both directions. Beautiful and relaxing town with everything you could ask for and still without the noise from clubs until late night like in Thira! A great place to stay as an alternative to Fira, if you are happy to walk into the town for 15 minutes along a beautiful cliff side walk, which is sometimes steep in places and can be very hot! Firostefani is close enough to Fira that you can't tell the difference really. Santorini in general is very touristy even in October. Too many tourists! Very much a tourist trap. Worth seeing the crazy cliff side architecture of Fira and Oia on a short stay but not really somewhere I will return to, but other people love it. Do the hike from Fira to Oia (lots of ups and downs though) for amazing views of the volcanic crater that created Santorini. Stay here or anywhere close to Fira though since all the very inexpensive Metro buses terminate in Fira and the island is tiny so you can do easy trips from the bus terminal to all parts of the island and there is really no need to rent a car.Guest review byGordonUnited States - 8.0

A lovely location with the caldera view, with a scenic costal walkway to the next town, Fira. There is also a public bus that goes to Fira. But do find out the schedules before hand and where the bus stops are located. It also has nice restaurants and ahops within walking dustance.
