A wonderful village high in the mountains of Corfu, abandoned in the 1950s, but now undergoing sensitive restoration. Excellent traditional tavernas and a shop selling local pottery, olive wood items and honey. Well worth the 20 minute drive from the coast. Presently, slightly surreal, with so many dead and decaying, Venetian styled stone-houses. But I guess this will change as the 'ghost-village' rebuilds itself. It may then lose a part of the character that is currently attracting visitors. But it will still be high in the mountains, still in the shadow of Pantokrator and its blasphemy of a telecommunications carbuncle, and still with all the peace and the space that goes with it, along with tavernas still serving rabbit stew; so leave your sun-beds and snorkels in Kassiopi, and take the long and winding road up to Perítheia. The small village of Old Peritheia has it's own magic and along with it a history, more recently the addition of the Merchants House is a perfect accompaniment to the already popular Tavernas.
