Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening. Want a unique experience then you must see Matera . We stayed in Locanda di san martino which has thermal baths and enjoyed a massage .Took an open car with guide and was worth it, went into a cave dwelling set up as it was in days gone .We just fell in love with the sassi in Matera !Guest review bymichelleAustralia - 10.0

Matera is quite a unique place to visit and Sassi Matera is nothing like I’ve ever seen and had I known that we would have planned a longer stay. It was so easy to enter the Sassi and you could go up/down and enter/exit in so many places. Matera was bigger than I had imagined, very clean and progressive. Our appartment owner gave us a map but they did not appear readily available , number of people asked us where they could get one. Take the green route and walk the full cit , really worth it. Descend into the sassi but do in the morning when cooler. Eat at burger and pale, divine ribs and wine only 4 euros a glass. We stayed for two nights to celebrate my 50th birthday and it did not disappoint. Exceptional quality and design with the most wonderful terrace with that view! The hot tub was needed after the days heat, a great addition to the stay. The staff were extremely attentive, with lots of hints and tips and a very good breakfast is served.
