Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

The archeological museum was well worth the trip and our main reason to go. We also loved the subterranean tunnel tour, the veiled Christ sculpture and of course the magnificent Pizza Margherita! There’s a definite energy vibe in this city. Naples is a large city with a lot of car and scooter traffic. Getting around the city may be overwhelming at first but once you learn how to travel on the Metro train system it gets much easier. The trains & stations are clean & safe & signage is clearly posted. The restaurants in Naples are excellent and are very good value. The pizza is AMAZING! Naples is also a great place to stay if you want to visit Pompeii, The Amalfi Coast, Sorrento for day trips. Naples is a city that's now on the tourist map. That's not a bad thing per se. It means that areas that might have been down-at-heel a decade ago are now vibrant. Napoli is a city that's been around forever, and there's lots to explore - in the city and surrounding areas. It also has the highest population density of any Italian city (more than double that of Rome!), meaning that the sidewalks and streets are busy and noisy. Don't be put off by it. Naples is also known for its authentic pizza and street food. The city has a lively, sometimes gritty feel, blending beautiful old buildings with busy, energetic streets.
