The town had everything we wanted in terms of services and places to visit were all in close proximity of one another. We ate at the hotel on the main street as well as a pizzeria a few doors down from our place. The pizza was the best there. For those who may not know, Val Gardena is comprised of...
For those who may not know, Val Gardena is comprised of three distinct areas; Selva, Ortisei and Santa Cristina. My advice on where to stay is to try and figure out which mountain ranges you plan on hitting. That said, all three locations are very close together, and you can access them all within ten minute on the same bus. Personally, I would stick to Selva or Ortisei simply because of their access to vastly different mountain areas. Great base near many cable cars to get up the hills and enjoy the walking and views. Free buses between all the villages is a great help and they run regularly. The town is the perfect location to explore the Dolomites. Hotels and Apartments are plentiful and in every price level. You can choose from so many hikes (all different levels) you can fill 3 weeks. Depending what other locations are on your itinerary, 3 days allow you to see the highlights and get a sense of the beauty of the Dolomites. Yet, it's easy to fill a week. While Selva absolutely lived up to everything we had heard about how spectacular the Dolomites are, we unfortunately had no fresh snow. We'd made a very long trip from Australia to ski and snowboard, so it was disappointing. That said, we had decent cover and loved the long runs and apres venues. if you are a beginner intermediate you could spend a week on the Sella Ronda - if you are advanced you would get bored after 3-4 days Nothing very challenging for the real adrenaline junkies Selva is a pretty town with lots of hotels and few chalets. Parking for free (not always easy in Dolomites, so the car doesn´t get frozen at night). The buffet for breakfast was splendid.
