We really liked Matsumoto and it was a much more fun and interesting city than we expected. We had an overnight stay, largely to visit the famous castle, after visiting Kiso valley. Would happily have stayed longer.

If you are considering buying something from bookoff in another city, make sure you visit the one in the Alpico plaza first. They are cheaper than the ones in Osaka. There’s a yakiniku place that’s really good but I can’t remember the name but it’s not far away from the matsumo station. For anyone wanting to visit kamikochi in this rainy season, I suggest you get a hotel here and just book a bus ticket for kamikochi the night before visiting so you’ll know for sure what kind of weather you’ll be dealing with. Also, if you haven’t visited Narai-juku, check it out and complete the trail, you’ll be more than amazed.

Matsumoto castle was beautiful, especially lit up at night. The Kasuma Yayoi gallery was impressive, with a really nice courtyard and cafe for lunch or a drink. Nakamichi street has really interesting architecture; with very quaint shops including one serving delicious shaved ice desserts!

l love the small cosy Matsumoto nothing like other big cities. it has its own charm and the food was great. the people are warm and friendly in spite of language barrier. staying near the station was a plus making our hopping from place to place an easy task. delighted to visit Wasabi Farm and enjoyed wonderful time taking beautiful pictures. Got a chance to enjoy Wasabi ice-cream too, just disappointed that we missed the harvest of wasabi onsite. Hope to visit again and explore further.

Only stayed one night as part of a motorbike tour, so did not see much apart from the castle and dinner. The castle is interesting, being one of the oldest, if not _the_ oldest surviving castle, having been built sometime in the 1500's without being rebuilt in the meantime. Unfortunately it is much too crowded, expect at least half an hour wait to get in, and once inside, it's almost a conga-line getting to the top and back down, making it difficult to actually appreciate the building and the period gun exhibits. The price has also increased a lot - a few years ago I paid 700yen, now the ticket is 1300yen. It's also currently (2005-04) got some refurbishment work on the outside. But still a definite visit, make sure to come back at night time for some great pictures of the lit-up castle reflecting in the moat. In town there's plenty of opportunities for restaurants and bars. There's some local specialities such as deep-fried chicken in a garlic and soy-sauce marinade and basashi (horse sashimi), both of which are great.

    Nice castle.

Nice castle. We got a free guided tour in English - which helped us understand the rich history of the castle. Then walked around the city and went to the Yayoi Kusama exhibition in the museum of Art. Weather at this time of the year was lovely - sunny and 15 degrees...

When we arrived at the ryokan it was snowing and cold in Matsumoto. Our host immediately gave us towels and helped us feel welcome. She showed us around the ryokan. It was clean, warm, comfortable. The beds were like sleeping on clouds. The rooms were clean and it was wonderful sleeping in a traditional Japanese house. The shower was hot and powerful. The ryokan is located on a pretty road (Nakamachi Dori) with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. One of our favourite stays on this trip.

We had a wonderful stay in Ryokan Seifuso. The Ryokan is run by a very friendly family. The location is nice, next to a river and very quiet. A bus stop is just around the corner, which is very convenient. We loved the breakfast (both Japanese and Western), the spa and the very cozy atmosphere of the Ryokan. We loved using the bikes and biking across rice fields to Azumino. We loved everything and had a wonderful time. Matsumoto is a very cozy and peaceful city.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. Looks brand new, super clean, friendly staff, beautiful rooms. It feels like a Japanese inn but super comfortable as a hotel. Onsen is very nice, unfortunately because of the screens there is no view of the beautiful mountains from the bath. Close to Matsumoto station and downtown.

Tidy little hotel close by to Matsumoto Castle. As I have come to expect from Japanese hotels in this price range, the hotel was very clean and well maintained. However, the room was smaller than I had expected from looking at the pictures. They offer free parking but it was located two streets away.

Loved the cleanliness, the room amenities (clothing steamer/dryer was cool), the proximity to subway...and the breakfast was the BEST of all the hotels we had stayed at while in Japan (a total of 7). Next time we go to Nagano, this is the hotel we will come back to!!
