Niigata is a refreshing small city, and the river has beautiful views of both sides. Each side of the river has green pedestrian and bicycle rider paths. There is easy access to the Performing Arts Center with its living rooftop garden on it's oval shaped building. Hakusan Park is not to be missed - an oasis away from the hubbub of office and city life! Complete with a lotus pond, bridges, a large temple, Tori gates, and a pond with a wisteria-covered bridge. Very scenic. There are the shops on Furumachidori - a covered avenue with adorable shops, bronze figures of baseball players, and the Japan Animation and Manga College is on this avenue. Nigatta was a much slower pace. Feels like Sunday everyday. Chilled. It has fabulous restaurants and little local bars, great scenery. Definitely worth a visit for a few days. The bullet train ride from Tokyo to Niigata had lots of beautiful scenery along the way. So glad we decided to visit here on our third trip to Japan. I spent 2 nights in Niigata because the hotel I wanted was booked out. I recommend spending there at least three nights. I visited Yahiko, a city nearby, which has a gorgeous park with Momiji trees, it was beautiful at the end of October. The location is excellent to visit NIIGATA in the historical older part of town. The check-out staffs were so helpful, especially Bell-girl(?) named Satou-san. She helped me with my luggage. I have this business with the Korean Consulate in the same building in the morning, so I have to deposit(?) my luggage in hotel, and then I need to sent my luggage after because the changing plans and all of these with Satou-san's help.
