Zaandam is a little away from the center of Amsterdam but there is a train station within walking distance, though no subway system out there. There is a pedestrian shopping area with eateries and grocery stores, etc. It is a quieter area to stay than the main city center. Train fares are a bit more expensive than other EU countries but are regular and on time. I was only there for one night, a guest at an event that took up most of my afternoon and evening. The stormy weather (5 August) wasn't ideal for spending time outdoors!
