Krakow is a pretty city.
Krakow is a pretty city. It is a very popular tourist destination so quite crowded in the old town. Quite a lot of streets are pedestrians only so you need to walk to the museums etc. although there are some little trucks that can take you round. Masses of cafes and restaurants - its worth consulting a guide book. If you want to see Schindler's house you should book. We were there for three nights and managed to pack a lot in.
We were there for three nights and managed to pack a lot in. Day one:- flight landed midday, train to Krakow Glowny, checked into our apartment near the main square then taxi to Wieliczka salt mines in the afternoon. Worth a visit but beware if you are not fully mobile as there is a lot of steps down (800) & walking. Day two:- walked to Wawel Castle (did not do all of it) Afterwards walked to & wandered round parts of Kazimierz (the Jewish Quarter). Day three:- Train to Oswiecim & bus to Auschwitz-Birkenau, then back to Krakow. We tried some Polish food which was all good & local beer really nice. Don’t expect everywhere to be inexpensive neither as it’s not, you have to look for cheap restaurants, cafes, bars etc. (in amongst hundreds). It was very full on for us but we are not as young as we used to be, I would say to do Krakow at a fairly leisurely pace you would need at least five days but obviously it depends on what you want to do and see. The city of Krakow is absolutely amazing with loads of things to see and to do in the city center area. From the classic museum visits to the daily concerts performed by the The Cracow Chamber Orchestra at the St. Peter & Paul's Church. A couple of must visit items: The Underground Museum and St. Mary Cathedral and Tower. The food is also very good with some excellent restaurnt options, The Black Duck, Pod Aniolami and Morsie Oko. Beautiful city with old world charm. Friendly people. Lots of restaurants offering quality food and reasonable prices. And plenty of sites outside of town to visit. Salt Mine was spectacular. Our Auschwitz trip turned into a nightmare as we hadn't booked in advance (recommend at least one month prior) so we were forced to get last minute tickets. The company (Gr8Way) gave us a confirmed tour time (10AM) and pickup (8:15AM) and at the last minute changed the pickup to a very early one (6AM for a 10AM tour)! We called to cancel but they said they already purchased the tickets but found out they most likely had none. After discussing with a local taxi driver, he said they make you go early so they can purchase tickets at 7AM or so when Auschwitz opens and offers a few day tickets.
