This renovated stone structure into a beautifully appointed 8 room boutique hotel was perfection! Such a relaxing setting looking out to a gorgeous infinity pool with olive trees and unobstructed landscape for miles. Stefano and Katarina were lovely host. They went out of there way to make our stay one of the best stays of 9 location. We didn't make reservations one night and texted them out on the road and they found us a lovely restaurant in the next town over. You will not be disappointed!!

It was an amazing place steeped in history! The walk to the castle is a must as there are beautiful views at every turn. You will find yourself awestruck trying to fathom how it was possible to create a town amongst the boulders. It’s truly an amazing and magical place.

An amazing town with great views. Climbed up to the castle. All the houses built around the boulders were so interesting. Parking is very challenging here. Not great if you have mobility challenges.

Monsanto is a wonderful and unique town perched high amongst enormous boulders with Castle ruins and stunning views across Portugal. There are is an easy walk to the Castle and great coffee/wine shops and an excellent restaurant Monsanto Cafe and Bistro to enjoy.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways. There was an old castle with an archangel Michael chapel - the House of the Dragon, a TV series, was filmed there. Many of the buildings had a huge boulder as one side of the structure or maybe a roof. We loved the hiking around there as well. And the views were spectacular. You could just feel the history around you.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and...

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk...

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

We are so happy we chose The Quinta de Sao Pedro. Ingrid and Thorsten were amazing hosts. Delicious breakfast made by Ingrid. Totally enjoyed the freshly picked oranges from the orchard trees that surrounded us in the backyard where breakfast was served. We drove to town and had a most enjoyable dinner in a restaurant by the entrance to this very interesting village of Monsanto. One of our most memorable stops while driving through Portugal. Hope to return one day. Thank you, Ingrid! You're amazing👏

Maria was really thoughtful, she provided tea and coffee with biscuits, nuts and fruit. If we had decided to cook, there was a fully fitted kitchen. There was even a washing machine for our use. We had also had an amazing rooftop patio with table and chairs where we could look out over Monsanto. We were able to identify our balcony from every viewpoint in the village.

The apartment was beautiful and had everything we needed! Eloisa cooked and served an amazing breakfast to the terrace. Both her and Fernando were lovely people. And Monsanto is so special and beautiful. Would definately stay here again!
