It was an amazing place steeped in history! The walk to the castle is a must as there are beautiful views at every turn. Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways.
Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways. There was an old castle with an archangel Michael chapel - the House of the Dragon, a TV series, was filmed there. Many of the buildings had a huge boulder as one side of the structure or maybe a roof. We loved the hiking around there as well. And the views were spectacular. Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.Guest review byPeterNew Zealand - 6.0

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.Guest review byDanCanada
