Kilwa Beach Lodge is the only hotel on about 2km of beach. At low tide you can walk about 500m up to the water. At high tide the level of water is just perfect for bathing, especially if you are not a strong swimmer. The little houses are directly on the beach. For lunch and dinner a 3-course menu is suggested to you and you can add or replace parts of it. The food is excellent. The lodge can organize trips to the ruins or for snorkling or diving. We had a really good time.

The Island tour and the Snorkeling trip provided by the main tour operator (Athumani) next to the main bus station were great value and very personal - the two of us had our own guide. if you have only a short time then the songo mnara island trip combines both snorkeling and historical ruins (though not as extensive as Kilwa Kisiwani - which are extensive and amazing), in one trip. We enjoyed walking around the town and beach areas, snacking in the local bars with a cold drink - wonderful!

This is mainly transit place on the way to Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara UNESCO sites. Also some tourists who go to Selous Game Reserve come here on their way or take some rest before / after safari.

In fact, the trip was not just about ruins.

In fact, the trip was not just about ruins. The guide from Tourist Board had organized a lunch at sea after the visit of the firts siland, where he fought fresh fish from fisherman and get them to gril the fish for us while we were visiting the island. Thus excellent lunch at sea on the boat, in an area with coral less than 2m deep. After lunch, snorkling session with fantastic view of sea life in cristal clear waters. Great moment. Ruins and explanations given by the guide about the history of those island were just excellent.
