The sightseeing places are amazing!
The sightseeing places are amazing! The traffic in the city, especially near those historic places are jammed. The people are very friendly, the cafes and restaurants are much better now than it was 4-5 years ago. Tourist traffic is not very dense, there are lots of tourists but not so much. The prices of hotels and meals are not high, even considering local Uzbekistan's prices. A city with stunning architecture and easy to walk around.
A city with stunning architecture and easy to walk around. The Regaton (main square) is the highlight and is also worth visiting in the evening to see the sound and light show. The city itself is lovely and the boulevards are leafy...
The city itself is lovely and the boulevards are leafy places which in the summer means you have plenty of shade in which hide from the baking sun. It's a big place with the majority of the sights within a kilometer radius of Ragistan square. I was a kilometer away so walked into the center via Navoi park which was a great place to sit and catch your breath and then get accosted by young ladies wishing to practice english for their exams (twice happened to me , must just have that type of face). Samarkand is commercial and one of contrasts. You have the old up at the Ragistan square whilst go to Navoi park and surrounding areas and you'll find more modern part of the town with i might add some good restaurants (Samarkand recommended) and, believe it or not "Pub Street" . The architecture of the historical buildings is...
The architecture of the historical buildings is extraordinary. The people are generally friendly and helpful. Many people speak Russian and Turkish in addition to Uzbek. I've visited Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. I could make similar comments about all three. However, the most beautiful is Bukhara, followed by Samarkand, and finally Tashkent. If I were to make a criticism, I don't think the city has a Muslim feel when you look at the details. The restrooms are generally clean, but there are no bidet. Furthermore, the call to prayer is inaudible unless you're very close to a mosque. Finding a mosque or masjid to pray is also difficult. Samarkand is absolutely stunning! The majestic madrassas of Registan, the peaceful Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, and the impressive Gur-e-Amir mausoleum where Tamerlane rests are unforgettable. The vibrant local markets and the rich history around every corner made this trip truly magical. The breakfast buffet was the most elaborate and delicious one I encountered on my entire trip to Uzbekistan and a fierce competitor to other buffets I have enjoyed in many hotel restaurants around the world. The location is fine, close to many restaurants and parks. A walk to the major historical sites is a bit longer (about 25 min), but you'll walk along a leafy boulevard and it is easy to get there. I really loved the decor, and the bed was large and comfortable. Every detail had been thought out. Lots of storage, a fridge, great lighting, and a good hairdryer. The garden is lovingly tended to by the owners, and a great spot to relax. I was able to check-in a little early, which was nice after a train ride from Tashkent. Staff are kind and speak English.
