Simply going for an evening walk in the neighbourhood is a great way to get a feel for the place (on the back, quieter streets where all the homestays are, not the main drag obviously). We stayed in Ban Lac, it was great for accomodation, food, shoping and as a departure point for bike rides and trips. They go out their way to make you feel comfortable and are very helpful. They gave nice recommendations and it's also possible to rent a motorbike or bike. The dinner was great and generous.
