De Aar is not really a tourist destination. It is not on any of the main roads going to vacation destinations. One would go there for business. There is only one pub restaurant that is open in the evenings, except on Sundays. On a Sunday afternoon, the only place to get a meal is a chicken take-away place. The town itself is charming, there are a variety of stores, and some awesome coffee shops that are open during the day.

De Aar is a convenient place to stop over on a long journey. The drive to De Aar from Namibia is beautiful as is the drive from De Aar to Cradock. De Aar itself is not beautiful. We used it as a transit point, and it suited our purposes. We ate at a restaurant recommended by our host. It is easy to get around. I would not choose it as a holiday destination.

De Aar is a nice small get away town with diverse small community that speaks mostly both afrikaans and xhosa. Its very hot & dry because its in the Karroo, but it rained and stormed hard when we were there but we enjoyed it because it cooled off.

The host is a nice person and accommodating. I also liked the fact that the place is spacious with a big enough bedroom, kitchen and a shower. And I loved the rusks, they were delicious. And the small religious books placed on the bedside, I loved that idea too, even though I was too tired to read them since I had to rest for my trip to Joburg the next morning. I will definitely consider staying here again the next time I find myself in De Aar.
