I was in Japan for the first time as a solo traveller and had such a lovely stay at Couscous. The glamping set-up is first class, the food is delicious, the location is beautiful and it’s a great way to visit the surrounding area (Hakone, Fugi 5 lakes etc), especially if you have a car. A special mention for Takeshi, Arisa, Shigeki & Stephane (the Couscous team) who were brilliant and helped me with everything from restaurant and site seeing recommendations, to ensuring I was very comfortable at Couscous. Arigatou gozaimashita! Mata Aimasho.

Our special thanks goes to the very nice male staff who render his efficient services in table-setting for the many dishes of traditional Japanese cuisines, both for dinner and breakfast. He guided us the unique flavors of each type of food and the best way of eating with various sauces and condiments. He took the initiative to give us pamphlets about the sight-seeing spots nearby. We took his advice and did another hour of touring to learn more about Atami. It was a very hospitable and warming journey we had had with this hotel. This was an absolutely fantastic experience! This hotel room was the best we’ve stayed in throughout our entire trip to Japan. Don’t be put off by the hotel’s location—there are bus routes just a 3-minute walk away, and an excellent onsen (one of the best in Hakone) is only a 10-minute walk from the property. The hotel building itself is quite old, but the room has a very fresh, modern, and authentic renovation, which we really loved. As for the room itself, it’s incredibly cozy—warm, with perfectly functioning air conditioning, all the necessary kitchen and bathroom amenities, and even a drink bar. The owner has clearly put a lot of effort into maintaining the room’s cleanliness and upkeep—no stray hairs on the floor, no dust, stains, or musty smells. Everything was spotless and comfortable. We also loved the traditional Japanese touches in the room—swords on display (I think they were a katana and a tanto, though I’m no expert) and beautiful traditional women’s garments like yukatas and uchikake, which you can wear for a photoshoot. There’s even a QR code linking to a video on how to properly put them on. The room also offers a stunning view of the mountainside and cherry blossoms—the scenery from the window is absolutely breathtaking, and my wife was completely delighted. The bedding was fresh, warm, and comfortable, and the mattresses were great too. The owner himself is very friendly, responds quickly, and is always ready to help if anything comes up. I highly recommend choosing this room if you’re planning a trip to Hakone and want to enjoy the onsen!

We are a couple from Australia and stayed at Ashikari for two nights. The rooms were immaculate, comfortable and spacious. The outdoor onsen tub is amazing and the view over the mountains makes it unforgettable. The public onsen was also beautiful. The food is an experience in itself - exceptional with creative courses - even for a very big appetite such as myself. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, even as we only speak English - especially the manager who went above and beyond for us. It is easily accessible from Yugawara station (we let them know our train arrival time and they came and picked us up) and close to Tokyo, as we were travelling through from Osaka. The town itself is pleasant enough but quiet - you don't really need to leave Ashikari in my opinion. It was a great contrast to the business of the major cities. Overall staying at a ryokan is a unique cultural experience. Ashikari delivered that with luxury in abundance. It was one of the highlights of our trip. I would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity.
