All rooms at Piece Hostel Sanjo are air conditioned. Some units come with a private shower room and toilet, while there are shared shower rooms and toilets for other guests at the property. Bed linens and towels are provided free of charge. Female-only dormitory rooms are available. Very clean, central, and neat stay. The staff was cordial and the collective amenities in the common area were not short than spectacular, from prime coffee-making tools to high-quality beans and teas. Good common areas and architecture as well.

Opened in April 2013 with brand new facilities, Piece Hostel Kyoto is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station. It features a spacious and comfortable lounge, a tatami (woven-straw) terrace and a wall-size map with latest event information around Kyoto. Free WiFi is provided throughout the property, while portable WiFi devices are available for guests to use during their stay for an additional fee.

Private rooms are fitted with a flat-screen TV and a washbasin. A semi-double size bunk (120cm wide) in the dormitory rooms comes with a luggage space and a security locker. A great youth hostel, quiet and comfortable + a 5-min walk from the train station! We had a four-bed dorm: the room was spacious and the 4 beds comfortable and well separated. Everything was very clean and there is English-speaking staff. I would definitely come back!

Conveniently located in the centre of Kyoto, Colours offers air-conditioned rooms, a garden, free WiFi and a terrace. This 1-star hostel offers a shared kitchen and luggage storage space. The property is non-smoking and is set 400 metres from Kyoto Shigaku Kaikan Conference Hall. The place has an authentic spark, we loved to stay here! The owner is really kind and helpful, gave a lot of tips and recommendations. Perfect for experiencing authentic Kyoto! It was a bit cold at night, but there was an ac and warm blankets, so it's not a problem! There's an onsen just by the place, so you can relax after a long day of exploring

Conveniently located in the centre of Kyoto, Guesthouse Itoya Kyoto offers air-conditioned rooms, a garden, free WiFi and a terrace. This 1-star hostel offers a shared kitchen and a concierge service. The property is non-smoking and is set 1 km from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. This is an amazing guesthouse. I wanted to have the full traditional japanese house experience and I had everything. This a traditional guesthouse with tatamis, shower and restroom in the oustide and with a beautiful little garden. The common area is cute, the decoration is beautiful. Everything is provided, clean and organised. The neighborhood is very nice, a little far away from the subway station but really close from the bus stations. Hence I only used buses in Kyoto. The staff were amazing ! But if I could say something maybe they are a little too much in a haste to clean in early morning. It’s 7 or 8 and they are already replacing stuff straight back after us so I felt a little bit like I was in the way. Maybe wait until most of the people leave around 10-11 hahaha? But this is a minor thing. Everything was really great. I loved every part of my stay and trip on Kyoto ! ARIGATOOO

A 15-minute walk from Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasaka Shrine, Guest House Gojo offers simple and cosy Japanese-style dormitory accommodation with free Wi-fi, futon beds and shared bathrooms. It is housed in a 100-year-old traditional building. This was one of the best stays I've had with Booking.com! The facilities are incredible and very beautiful, and the staff were so accommodating and welcoming! The location is also great - a lot of Kyoto's main sites are within walking distance, and if not, a subway or bus ride away. I am looking forward to staying at Gojo Guest house again at the end of the month.

Conveniently located in the centre of Kyoto, SHIN kyoto offers air-conditioned rooms, a shared lounge, free WiFi and a terrace. This 2-star hostel offers a shared kitchen. The property is non-smoking and is set 2.2 km from Kyoto Shigaku Kaikan Conference Hall. Shin was a fantastic host - helping me throughout my stay and making me feel extremely welcome. He has fantastic English and goes above and beyond with everything he does. The room was unbelievably clean and the bed was comfortable. The shared kitchen was always spotless and had all the equipment you would need (and complimentary coffee!). While not close to the main attractions in Kyoto, the accommodation is a two minute walk from the Metro so there is no real issue.

Boasting a terrace and views of city, Guest House Hennka Kyoto is situated in Kyoto, 1.4 km from Sanjusangen-do Temple. Featuring a garden, the 2-star hostel has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a private bathroom. The accommodation features a shared kitchen, and luggage storage for guests. We spent 7 nights at this guesthouse, and it was an important part of our wonderful experience in Kyoto. The couple that runs the guesthouse became friends with us. They fed us a delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and cabbage salad, which we enjoyed every morning. We had a great time talking with the wife (who can speak English conversationally) every morning, as well as the three other couples who came and went during our long stay. This guesthouse is definitely for people who enjoy the experience of meeting other travelers, want to learn about Japan from their hosts, are looking for a getaway from the big cities, and don't mind walking about 20 minutes to and 20 minutes from (uphill) the closest train station. It's not for people who want a reclusive getaway, don't like walking long distances, are looking for a normal hotel experience, or can't navigate steep stairsteps. This guesthouse allows you to live around the locals in a quiet, non-touristy neighborhood. Our twin room was very spacious compared to our budget hotel room in Tokyo, had a traditional feel to it, and was quite comfortable on hot days with the wall-mounted AC. Going to the bathroom or toilet room does involve walking a few steps out onto the balcony attached to your room, but with the house being high in the hills, it still feels reasonably private. This guest room is next to the one other guest room at this property, so you do need to be aware of noise levels. Below the guest rooms is a vacant art gallery space that serves as a large common area that's currently available to guests but may not always be if it's being used as a gallery. Attached to the gallery is a large patio with a view of Kyoto — a great place to sit in the morning or while eating dinner. If you're looking for a wonderful stay in Kyoto that's a little out of the ordinary, and you're an active traveler that wants to experience the non-touristy side of the city, this may be your place.
