If your 'bucket list' has on it to sleep underground in a cave with natural rock walls, (and not feel claustrophobic), then Ali's Underground HOME welcomes you! Live and relax like a local in the tranquillity of this 2-bedroom dugout with your own lounge with Smart TV and a full kitchen with dining space. The laundry provides washing powder, pegs and an outside under-cover clothesline. Our HOME offers a queen and single bed in each bedroom.
After renting this stunning dugout to professional health workers for many years, I can now offer it for you, the tourist, to enjoy.
Located near the Catacomb Church in a safe and quiet part of town, you will enjoy all the comforts and facilities of home including linen, laundry and cooking facilities. Dugouts keep a constant temperature of between 18-25 degrees Celsius but we have fans as well as a split system air con to ensure good air circulation for your complete comfort all year round.
There is ample and a secure space for parking caravans, trailers or motorhomes right out the front. Set in the highest hill in town, you will have a view over the plains to the Kanku-BreakAways.
Please note that only guests who have booked are permitted to enter Ali's Underground HOME.
Please phone Ali if you'd like a pet to stay with you.
During the cooler months, we provide a Fire Pit at the front of the property. This space has great views over the desert and is a peaceful place to relax and watch the stars together.
After 8 years of living in this amazing community of Coober Pedy, my husband and I have now stopped paid work. We were happy wanderers in our caravan for 2 years before settling nearer our grandchildren... we still enjoy the outdoors!
Our fabulous housekeeper lives nearby and I like to do all the interesting work with our guests, so if you have any questions, please call me. I am known for the great personal support I give guests in planning their adventure and any questions they may have - no matter how small.
Can I encourage you to stay for at least two nights to give yourself time to relax from the long drive and experience at least one or two full days in this unique place? When you come, you’ll forget all about the cares of your world and be immersed in this weird and wonderful community they call Coober Pedy – and do not be surprised if you wished you’d stayed longer!
The desert views and night skies are like nothing you have ever seen before! Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world, has a stunning lunar landscape, an underground lifestyle and a fascinating natural history. Follow Ali’s 2-page Tourist Tips for great details on how to make the most of your time. I email you this when you book. IF you have not explored Coober Pedy before, heed the advice of other tourists and book for a minimum of 2 nights, or you may regret it! Free underground exhibitions can be found in the Desert Caves and Umoona Museum on the main street. A MUST visit is to the Serbian church. Ali's Underground is near the Catacomb Church. All churches never close. Go on self-directed mine tours at Tom’s Mine or The Old Timers. Opal shops are scattered on both sides of Hutchison Street, each with their own specialties. Hold a Joey at the Kangaroo Orphanage, fossick for opal or play golf and drive alongside the 5,600km Dog Fence on your way to the breath-taking Kanku-BreakAways. You will be blown away by how many once-in-a-lifetime experiences Coober Pedy offers.
