This unique, open concept studio has a cottage style all its own. A gallery/shop/artist studio, this space is the perfect place for anyone wanting a break, getting away from it all, and slowing down. OPEN YEAR ROUND, The Studio, is ideal for sabbaticals or retreats and can be rented long term during the winter months. Come enjoy the winter months, watch the stormy weather right out front with tea or hot chocolate. I'M NOT COMPLETELY DONE WITH INTERIOR, WILL BE ADDING PHOTOS AS I GO ALONG Opening Spring of 2023
I was born and raised in Toronto, left on a two-week holiday and finally moved back, to Newfoundland, February 2015. The years in between I lived in Venezuela, Berlin and Munich where I raised my now 26 year old amazing daughter, Emilia-Louisa. I had bought a sweet heritage salt box, “Alice House” in the classic CFA (Come from Away) story we hear about, on my first afternoon, in Bonavista, 2006. I immediately fell in love with this town, even though it had not begun its transformation to the “must visit location” in Newfoundland. In 2010 I moved part-time to Bonavista for the summers, running the shop part of Neil’s Yard, the fore runner to the next generation of coffee/tea/restaurants and shops now located in Bonavista. My studio was upstairs, the shop carried the beautiful crafts of Newfoundland & Labrador Craft Council members, and we held many cultural events including monthly art exhibitions and readings by Newfoundland authors. I moved fulltime to Bonavista from Munich, in 2015 to head Bonavista Creative, part of Bonavista Living, for its first 2 years, bringing you new shops, restaurants, and many arts related projects. Next came the Bonavista Biennale 2017 of which I am an original steering committee member, and for which I was the location scout and community coordinator. Check out their site for all updates for Bonavista Biennale 2023. The next project I instigated, and helped establish, is Union House Arts, a community art space in Historic Port Union. The building is home to an art gallery, community kitchen, workshop space, studios, and an artist residence.
Canaille Rd is a long winding road along the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a brisk 10–15-minute walk into “downtown”. We have two supermarkets, both only a quick drive, pharmacy, hospital, pretty much everything you need except big box stores.....thank goodness! Out front in the wee garden above the cliffs/ocean we have a fire pit that was much used this season by the guests upstairs. Lots of whales, dolphins out front, and a few visits by otters was a delight for all. Want some fresh organic veggies, if Darlene has any in season, she checks for guests. Parking on ArtBonavista property is free but at your own risk. We will not be responsible for any damage caused to your vehicle, unless I did it, lol. Due to gas prices, we suggest, come with one car if possible. IF YOU INTEND TO RENT A CAR IN NEWFOUNDLAND, BOOK EARLY! They run out of rental cars every year. Turo is now available in NL Everything is accessible by foot, but I recommend using your car for grocery shopping. Both supermarkets, hospital, town hall and pharmacy are about a 6-minute drive. If its the historical part of Bonavista you’d like to explore, there are many places for parking at no cost. It’s a leisurely, scenic 20 minute walk, along the way is Ryan Premises, the fish plant, which is worth a visit. Sometimes you can buy directly from the fisherman! On Church St. you will find shops, cafe’s, ice cream, The Garrick Theatre, which hosts Newfoundland musical talent all summer. IN THE WINTER MONTH'S Bonavista is very basic but the regular local restaurants and cafe remain open.
