Città Vecchia, the Old Town is a captivating neighborhood where history, architecture, and charm intertwine. Characterized by narrow cobbled streets, centuries-old buildings, and enchanting inner courtyards, this area offers an authentic glimpse into the soul of the city. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, inviting visitors to wander and discover hidden gems around every corner.
Due to the elevation difference between Piazza Grande and the Old Town, accessing it on foot can be a bit of a climb. We recommend a more comfortable ascent using the elevator from the parking garage near the Rotonda, followed by the modern footbridge that leads directly into the historic district.
Once in the heart of the Old Town, take time to explore the Piazzetta delle Corporazioni, a quaint little square that captures the essence of bygone eras. Lose yourself in the atmosphere of Via Cittadella and Via Sant’Antonio, two of the most charming streets in the area, flanked by pastel-colored facades and artisan shops.
Art lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to the Casa Rusca Art Gallery, housed in an 18th-century patrician residence. The museum hosts a permanent collection of works by Jean Arp, as well as rotating exhibitions of local and international artists, making it a true cultural landmark of Locarno.
Continue your journey to Piazza Sant’Antonio, home to the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate, a sacred space originally constructed in 1664 and completed almost three decades later. After suffering a partial collapse in 1863, the church was rebuilt into the form we admire today. Inside, don’t miss the evocative Altar of the Dead Christ, a masterpiece of spiritual and artistic expression.
A short walk brings you to the Casa del Negromante, a mysterious patrician home that echoes with the legends of the past. Further along stands Palazzo Morettini, a former cloistered convent that now houses the Cantonal Library, blending past and present in perfect harmony.
