Sonvico, part of Lugano since 2013, owes its name to its location on a hill on the northern edge of the Cassarate valley, summus vicus, i.e. the highest village.
Numerous finds from Roman and pre-Roman times, such as a tombstone with an inscription in the North Etruscan alphabet, and several burials are linked to the district. There is also evidence from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
A territory under the dominion of the Dukes of Milan in 1400, in 1517 the Diet of the 12 Cantons formalised its adhesion to the Helvetic Confederation, setting as a condition the destruction of the walls of Castellanza (as the local community within the walls of Sonvico Castle was called at the time).
Until 1800, Sonvico also included within its boundaries the territory of the present-day district of Villa Luganese and, until 1878, also that of the municipality of Cimadera.
The core area, with its medieval layout, is well preserved.
Buildings of historical significance include the Oratory of San Martino, of Romanesque origin and a rare example of a church built in wood south of the Alps, the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Church of San Nazario. The Casa della Ragione is located on the main square. Another important historical testimony to the life of Castellanza is the Torchio delle noci (1582), one of the oldest remaining Piedmontese lever presses in Ticino.
