Zarautz, Getaria, Aia, and Orio, each with its own unique personality, make up the attractive Urola Costa region. Its unique terrain allows for walks or car rides between the sea and the greenest part of the region. The Coastal Way, which skirts the coastal mountains and never loses sight of the Cantabrian Sea, runs along the Gipuzkoan coastline and is one of the earliest routes to Compostela.
Upon arriving in Getaria, take some time to stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town, learning about its history, its Church of San Salvador, considered one of the Gothic jewels of the Basque Country, watching the arrival of fishing boats in the port, and remembering its illustrious figures: Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first to circumnavigate the globe, and Cristóbal Balenciaga, a legend of Parisian haute couture.
Zarautz is surrounded by meadows, forests, and vineyards that recall the region's txakola tradition. Tastings are available in some of the wineries.
Touring the Iñurritza Protected Biotope, we can ascend toward Talaimendi and, from there, descend toward the former whaling town of Orio. The power with which the rowers of the town's traineras propel themselves has placed them at the top of the competitions.
Aia is ideal for enjoying the landscapes, the farmhouses, and the traditions. Discover the frontons where the games of handball, pala, or cesta punta are played. Or head to the Pagoeta Natural Park.
In the afternoon, after a stroll along the Zarautz seafront, feel part of the gastronomic scene and enjoy pintxos in the bars surrounding the department. And then, book a table at any of the many restaurants. The best of our sea and land in the kitchen. A tip: order some fish! From the boat to the table.
