Neighbourhood information
Nazaret is a large charming village located in the centre of the island of Lanzarote and is part of the municipality of Teguise. Teguise is the largest municipality on the island, reaching both the east and west coast. The village of Teguise was the old capital of Lanzarote from the first half of the 15th century until the second half of the 19th century (1852), when it lost practically all its power to the new capital, Arrecife. It was the first and most important civil and urban settlement in the Canary Islands.
The town of Teguise has been noble and stately throughout its rich past, first with the Bethencourt dynasty and later with the Herrera family, both periods in which Teguise experienced moments of maximum splendour. Declared an architectural-historical-artistic site, it is one of the oldest villages and has written one of the most famous pages in the history of Lanzarote. Today, a stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town is a pleasant and welcoming experience.
The castle fortress of Santa Bárbara was built in the middle of the 15th century on top of the volcano of Guanapay. From this location you can see the village of Villa de Teguise, as well as a large part of the island. Nowadays it is an interesting museum in which the history of piracy in the Canary Islands is told.
Located in the Palacio Spínola in the historic centre of the town, the house-museum of the timple is a museum space that tells the story of this peculiar Canarian instrument: the timple. It also offers concerts and interesting cultural events throughout the year.
