The El Enebrillo estate is lucky and proud to be located in one of the most interesting places in the Spanish geography, the scene of some of the key moments in our history and guardian of an immense material and cultural heritage.
The Despeñaperros pass, formed around 320 million years ago and with previous geological structures, such as Los Órganos, which arose when the whole area was covered by an ancient sea, Despeñaperros has a curious morphology defined by its folds, fractures and cracks. This made the gorge the perfect place for the first peoples to settle in search of shelter and food; a place where they could develop their culture.
There are numerous prehistoric and Iberian sites, the latter including a considerable variety of bronze figures and statuettes, which were used as offerings in religious ceremonies in what is now known as the Collado de los Jardines Sanctuary and the Cueva de los Muñecos (Cave of the Dolls).
Following the Empedraillo Path it is possible to find the remains of the old Roman road, which connected the south and the centre of the peninsula. These roads remained in use until well into the Middle Ages and served to link the valley's inhabitants in their daily lives.
Despeñaperros was also the site of the mythical battle of Navas de Tolosa (1212), which marked a turning point in the struggles between the Christian kingdoms and the Caliphate with the victory of Alfonso VIII over the Almohads of Al-Nasir. Santa Elena is closely linked to this battle, as it was here that the Almohads set up their camp and where the cross to which the Christian victory was attributed was kept.
Despeñaperros continued to grow and transform, but without ever forgetting its roots and protecting the nature that characterises it and makes it famous. In July 1989, the area was declared a Natural Park, guaranteeing its protection and conservation.
