Châteauponsac is an ancient fortified town where you can admire monuments from the Middle Ages, such as a Benedictine priory, a Romanesque church, the Church of St. Thyrsus and a Roman bridge. Stroll through the suburb of Moustiers, a historic district and one of the most picturesque areas in the town, where many craftsmen once worked. Houses from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as an 18th-century mansion complete the historical heritage of this charming little town of character. Built on a rocky spur, Châteauponsac offers superb views over the Gartempe Valley, named after the river that runs peacefully through the municipality. Another marvel is the terraced gardens which overlook the Gartempe Valley and explain why the town is known as the Pearl of the Gartempe.
Lovers of art and history must be sure to visit the René Baubérot Museum, located within the former priory. Dedicated to folk arts and traditions, it also offers reconstructions of Limousin interiors and an archaeological collection.
For a pleasant outing in the countryside, there are a number of short and long hiking trails around Châteauponsac which offers beautiful views of the town.
