Moffat, a small town in the Annandale valley, grew from a village in the 17th century into a spa town due to the belief that the sulphurous waters of Moffat Well had curative powers. This belief brought many tourists to the area in the 18th and 19th centuries. The existing Town Hall was initially built as a Bath House, and many other buildings in town also date back to same time period. After walking about 1.5 miles into the countryside from the town, you'll reach the original well. Moffat's rise to prominence wasn't limited to its status as a spa town; the wool trade and its role as a transit hub on the routes between England and Scotland also played significant roles. Not only does the beautiful surrounding landscape provide excellent walking, cycling, and fishing options, but the town itself has become a popular destination in recent years. Moffat is conveniently located 50 miles from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, making it a great home base for exploring the cities. The Moffat Museum, several theatres, several art galleries, as well as numerous retail stores and dining establishments can all be found there. Don't miss the annual Moffat Gala in July or the legendary Moffat Sheep Races in August, and don't forget to indulge in some of the world-famous Moffat Toffee!
