Plumstead is the neighbour of the much sought-after, prestigious, and peaceful Greenwich which due to the presence of the Royal Observatory is the national centre for time. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was adopted by the USA in 1883. Plumstead’s position, moated by the Thames on half its flank, has turned it into a cul-de-sac where all sorts of flotsam and jetsam accumulate, such as an ancient windmill that’s turned into a pub, a parade of houses by Berthold Lubetkin and the ancient trees of Oxleas Wood. Plumstead Common with level grassland and avenues of trees is the ideal place for anything from a romantic or family picnic to playing games. With the Green Chain Walk running through the site, it also has a bowling green and hard-surface tennis courts, and is home to Greenwich Rugby Football Club. Its surrounded by common land protected by act of parliament and has the historical land mark and mysterious Slade ravine, an ancient valley formed at the end of the ice age by the torrents of water formed by melting glaciers. Plumstead Common has a strong sense of community with an annual get together in June, called Plumstead Make Merry, the longest-standing festival in the Borough.
