Being outdoors as often as possible is something I enjoy and where better than the Highlands of Scotland! I myself am Scottish and my husband Doug is also, from even further north in Scotland, Caithness. Together with our children we have planted thousands of trees and built off grid cabins for family use so doing this project was always going to happen! We hope that Little Getaway becomes a perfect base for guests to enjoy the Highlands.
A 10 minute walk from Little Getaway’s door is the Two Bridges Trail. A 2 mile stunning circular walk by the Blackwater river incorporating Silverbridge and Little Garve Bridge. This is an ancient trail walked in the past by soldiers and drovers (cattle herders). The walk was featured on ‘All Aboard’ hosted by Alan Cumming . The Royal Scotsman train sometimes makes a stop at Garve Station to allow its guests to enjoy this beautiful walk as part of its itinerary.
Strathpeffer 8.5 miles away is a lovely Victorian village and spa town once popular with the wealthy for short breaks. Sadly there is no working railway but the lovely station is still there and there is a tea room, shop and museum worth a visit as are the lovely old hotels and streetlights. Other shops and coffee shops are also in the village as well as a lovely old Pavilion which still host various events.
Little Getaway in Little Garve is an excellent base or stopping point to explore the Highlands.
Many beautiful places are accessible in an hour or less drive such as Inverness, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Nairn , Dornoch ,Gairloch, Inverewe ( famous botanic gardens) Ullapool ,Aviemore etc.
In under 90 mins you can be on the Isle of Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, Applecross and Lochinver ( great pies!)
No shortage of places to go out and about and if you like hill walking Ben Wyvis is only a 4 mile drive away with Little Wyvis walkable from the door via the Two Bridges Trail.
