My simple cottage in Kington is in a beautiful, quiet part of the world. Set in Market Hall Square, a conservation area at the heart of the community. You can see the livestock market from the rear of my cottage, which takes place twice a week. I come to the cottage to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, and Kington as a whole is perfect for escaping. Please note, this is a close community and whilst it is self check in, the neighbours and the cleaner live on the same street. Any additional guests or dogs not booked will attract charges.
I like cooking and I am a foodie. I like wild swimming and paddleboarding. I love the arts and music, so do expect to see a glimpse of these things at the cottage. Feel free to read any books or listen to music.
Kington was an important medieval market centre, particularly for livestock. Post medieval it was renown for cloth making glove making and later, nail making. Some wattle and daub buildings survive , with updated frontages. The earliest timber frame is on the High street and is a cruck framed hall of the 14th Century. Georgian and Regency period buildings are close to Market Hall. Within easy walking distance is the wonderful Hergest Ridge, house and gardens. The River Arrow runs through Kington, converging with Back Brook. The High Street has many independent shops and Market days attracts visitors with its assortment of independent artisans. Offa's Dyke path is easily accessible from the cottage, and runs just below Kington golf club. The highest golf club in England! The little towns of Presteigne and Pembridge offer interesting and valuable historical context and Hereford City centre is 20 mile away. Hay on Wye is 10 miles distance and the journey to Hay over Brilley mountain is always thrilling. Taking a dip in the Wye and paddle boarding are life affirming activities in the Spring and Summer, and The Globe at Hay and Booths bookshop easily help you while away the hours. The Elan Valley and the Radnor Hills are on the doorstep. Cycling, bird watching or simply walking in the Elan, with its dark skies, is magic. Foodies take note; there are fine butchers and fruiterers in the town and a fab deli. The Harp Inn at Old Radnor is fabulous food, but closer to home The Swan pub and restaurant in Kington does Herefordshire steaks to perfection. If you fancy a swim and sauna, Cloud Nine at The Burton Hotel offers spa days, with late night closing. And right on the doorstep is The Queens Head offering live music, local ales and Guinness on tap. Perfect.
