Introducing The Old Cider House. Situated in Hay-on-Wye town center, this 3 bedroom 3.5 bathroom cottage is a perfect base for a week of exploration and relaxation. The Cottage was originally an apple store and has been refurbished from the original cider house which was first purchased in 1891 from Lord Glanusk. The cottage is now complete with en-suite bathrooms, log burner, garden, fully fitted kitchen, dining area, conservatory and private parking.
The cottage is finished throughout with high quality attention to detail, having been renovated in 2020 by Simon, Kazuko and Hannah their daughter. All the cushions and table mats have been hand crafted by Kazuko using traditional Japanese needlework. The slate table in the garden is Welsh slate and was part of the old cold pantry shelving in Belmont house.
The products you'll find at the cottage are all from local suppliers so you can enjoy the fabulous fragrance and properties of Welsh Lavender in all the bathrooms at the Old Cider House. A welcome basket of goodies, basket of logs, towels, linens and Welsh Lavender bath products are all complementary with your stay.
We are your hosts Simon and Kazuko, when we both retired from teaching we wanted to move to Wales and spent two years driving round Wales to find our favourite place. Hay is an idyllic town to live, and with our love of books, and the vibrant community, it was a perfect spot for us. When Simon was young, he used to camp in the Wye valley every summer, so has fond memories of all the time spent in the Brecon Beacons and canoeing on the River Wye. We bought the cottage in the summer of 2020 between the two lockdowns, and spent 6 months renovating it through lockdown.
Hay-on-Wye is famously known all over the world as the Town of Books. Boasting over thirty bookstores to browse, Hay is most popular during the annual Guardian Hay Festival during the last few weeks of May. The town also features a plethora of independent shops including art galleries, vintage shops, coffee shops, bakeries, vegetable shops, cosy pubs and much more. Once you've had your coffee and mooched through the book stores, there's a range of outdoor activities in the area to fill your afternoons. Walking distance from the cottage, the River Wye offers a pebble stone bank to wild swim or relax with a picnic. For the more adventurous types there's kayaking, cycle routes, hikes and activity centres a-plenty. An information booklet and pamphlets will be available for you to browse at the cottage on your arrival.
