Once we’d negotiated a move to one of the cottages, rather than just a room in the pub, everything was hunky dory! The cottage was clean, comfortable and reasonably equipped.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, very good breakfast. We stayed when the weather was very warm but the room was always cool, in fact we did not need to use the fan provided.

Room was very bright, it just had Venetian blinds. Curtains would be better, as facing east in June it was very light, at 5am difficult to sleep in! Restaurant food very good.

Property information

The White Lady was once called 'The New Inn'. It was built in 1825 (according to the date panel on the side of the pub) by Sir G.B Brograve after the original pub at the end of The pub ithe church was knocked down due to the noise they were making caused problems with the church. The pub was built on the site of an earlier building where they stored wool in the cellars, these same cellars are now used by the pub. There was once three pubs built in the village The Kings Head (now Church View House) and The White Horse in Briggate - now only the The White Lady is left. Worstead gives its name to a type of cloth, Worsted, woven in the village in the middle ages. From the Conquest onwards Flemish weavers migrated to England, but it was not until the reign of Edward II that their cloth came to be known as worsted. Worstead is a historic conservation weavers village, with a mixture of historical and modern buildings with one of the finest 14th century gothic churches in the area. The pub is within easy walking distance to Worstead railway station with regular trains to Norwich & elsewhere across the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

Neighbourhood information

Worstead is in North East Norfolk, once a populous town but now a small village served by one beautiful church which can be seen from the White Lady. The village consists of a main street and a square, where markets and hiring fairs were originally held. Wrdesteda or Ordested, as Domesday calls the village, was given by King Canute to the abbots of St. Benet of Holme, amid the Norfolk Broads. These abbots held the manor till the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. During the time of Edward the Confessor the manor was held for the abbots by Robert, an officer of the cross-bow men. His son Odo took over the holding on his father's death and assumed the name of De Worstead. Worstead gives its name to a type of cloth, Worsted, woven in the village in the middle ages. From the Conquest onwards Flemish weavers migrated to England, but it was not until the reign of Edward II that their cloth came to be known as worsted. Hitherto most of the Norfolk wool had been exported to Flanders whence it was imported in the form of cloth. The beautiful North Norfolk coast is only 6 miles away with the famous Norfolk Broads only 5 miles away.
