Wassail Barn is a charming cottage, expertly converted from a former grain store. It takes its unusual name from the ancient ceremony of 'Wassailing' an ancient tradition in cider-producing regions to promote a good harvest.
The main entrance to the property is from the patio via the French doors to the light living room. This area is tiled with underfloor heating, a woodburning stove, sofa and dining table and chairs to seat 4 people. The kitchen is well equipped with a fridge, oven, hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and dishwasher. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with single bunk beds. The bathroom has a walk in shower, toilet and sink. There is a shared utility area, with freezer, washing machine and condenser dryer between Wassail Barn and John's Cottage.
Immediately outside the cottage is a delightful sunny patio where guests will want to sit with a glass or two in the evenings. There is a parking area for 2 cars.
Just across the drive is an enclosed garden area for guests which is a shared space with our other cottage, John's Cottage. John's Cottage sleeps 6 and can be booked in addition to Wassail Barn for larger parties.
Wassail Barn and John's Cottage have recently been taken over by Amber and Andrew Goodey. They have moved to the area from Chilcompton, about 15 miles away. They have 3 teenaged children, 3 dogs and 3 horses. They like to give guests space to enjoy their holiday/trip in peace, but live onsite so can provide assistance if required.
The local village of Wedmore is approximately a mile away from John's Cottage. It has 3 pubs, an Indian restaurant and a licensed Café. Cheddar is approximately 3 miles away and also has a number of good pubs and restaurants. The Gorge is spectacular all year round and is a hub for outdoor pursuits and you can visit the famous caves too.
The beautiful city of Wells, (England's smallest City) is approximately 20 minutes from the property by car. The Cathedral is well worth a visit as is the Bishop's Palace. The Palace along with the Crown Pub were used as settings for the film 'Hot Fuzz'. Glastonbury is also approximately 20 minutes by car. The famous Tor, Chalice Well, Abbey ruins and a vast number of eclectic shops can be visited here.
Wookey Hole is on the way to Wells and has numerous attractions for younger visitors including a large Cave complex. Clarks shopping Village near street is also within half an hour.
Approximately an hour away is the World Heritage city of Bath, with its Roman Baths, Abbey, Spa and Pump Rooms and superb Georgian architecture. Bristol with its vast shopping centre is approximately 45 minutes away. Both cities deserve at least a whole day's exploration.
The beaches of Weston Super Mare, Berrow and Brean are all approximately 10 miles from the property. Avalon Marshes Nature reserves can be found within a few miles, at Westhay and Shapwick. The Starlings perform their murmerations over winter at these locations. Lastly there are beautiful walks with far reaching views not far away on the Mendip Hills AONB at Crook Peak, Draycott Sleights, Cheddar Gorge and Burrington Combe.
There is an enclosed garden for guests to enjoy the outdoors (this is a shared space for both cottages) and a footpath runs through the property which takes you up through the fields, where you could walk to Wedmore and further afield.
