On the road that connects Argos with Nafplio, is located the ancient acropolis of Tirintha, built on a rocky hill. The ancient city of Tiryns was one of the most important Mycenaean cities. It was founded by the hero Tiryns, the son of Argos, and his grandson Zeus, who, according to mythology (Homer, B 559), built her walls with the help of the Cyclops. Her first mythical king was Proitos, brother of Akrisios, king of Argos. In mythology, the king of Tiryns Eurystheus ordered the labors of Hercules. The city has enjoyed great prosperity until the descent of the Dorians. In 460 BC Was destroyed by the Argives. The mythical heroes of Vellerefontis and Perseus are also associated with Tiryns. From the ancient city, the mythical Cyclopean walls, the unique vaulted tunnels, as well as the Palace of the palaces are preserved - and can be visited in the archaeological site - decorated with wonderful performances. The archaeological site has been declared a monument of UNESCO΄s world cultural heritage.
