The Evanthea residence owes its name to the host's grandmother, whose inheritance it was, as part of the larger Stratigaki family estate. The estate was purchased around 1850 by the ancestor of the family and abbot of the monastery of the Holy Trinity of Tzagaroli. Its construction dates back to the early 1700s and has been influenced by Venetian architecture, which can be distinguished by the stone arches in most of the rooms, the elaborate gutters for collecting rainwater and the double cistern that still remains. Over the years it was used as a residence, stable, storage for grain, olive oil, etc. During the period of the Cretan Revolution it was a place of gathering for the Cretan Fighters, culminating in the convening of the General Assembly of Cretans in 1898 in the presence of Eleftherios Venizelos, a fact that, together with its age, contributed to it being declared a historical monument in 1990. In 1980 the residence was radically renovated to house the host's family for more than 20 years and in 2009 it was renovated again to become the host's bachelor residence for 5 years. In 2023 the last renovation was carried out in order to use it as a tourist accommodation. The furniture and decorative elements are family heirlooms with several of them pre-dating WWI. The fact that the whole building is listed as a monument by the Archeology Department, combined with the increasing number of co-owners over the years, makes it difficult to make modifications to the interior and exterior public spaces. You also have the opportunity to explore the courtyards and gardens of the estate, always respecting the privacy of the other residents the majority of whom are relatives of the host. There is the possibility, by arrangement, to visit the family's garden and henhouse, collecting fruits, vegetables and eggs depending on the season and availability, thus having a wholesome experience during your stay at “Evanthea”.
