The region acquired its name from the mythical Arcas, son of Zeus and Callisto, while the Arcadians claimed that they were the only indigenous inhabitants of Greece. Their ancestor was considered Pelasgos, son of Zeus, and they believed that they were the first humans after the flood. This view was also accepted by Callimachus, Plutarch, and Ovid, who mention that the settlement of the Arcadians took place before the appearance of the Moon and that the Arcadians themselves described themselves as “Proselytes.” According to mythology, many gods of Mount Olympus were born in Arcadia: Zeus on Mount Lycaion, Poseidon, Hera, Hermes, Athena, and Asclepius. However, the main Arcadian god was the goat-legged Pan, god of music and herds, who, with his numerous followers of Sileni, Maenads, Dryads, and Naiads, made Arcadia an idyllic land of myth. Another tradition attributes the name to the Arktos (bear), which was the form that Zeus turned the nymph Calisto into, in order to protect her from the wrath of Hera when she learned about their relationship.
