Marayoor, situated at around 990 metres above sea level, 40 kilometers north of Munnar is the only place in Kerala that has natural sandalwood forests.
Marayur claims to be a part of a Stone Age civilization that is as old as 10,000 B.C. It is also home to a later period of large-scale dolmen-building. The ‘Muniyara’ or dolmenoid cysts, made of four granite slabs on edges and capped by another slab, which are burial chambers belonging to the megalithic age at Kovilkadavu and also around the area called Pius nagar, and rock paintings on the south-western slope of the plateau overlooking the river are historic attractions.
The sandalwood from the natural sandalwood forests of Marayoor is said to be of high quality. There is a ‘Sandalwood Regeneration Experimental Plot’ here from where one can learn more on the fragrant tree. The State Forest Department runs a sandalwood depot here where travelers can see the processing of sandalwood.
The property is located in a village with limited mobile network coverage. For your convenience, we offer Wi-Fi at the property. Please note that only BSNL and Jio mobile connections have network access.
