Mount Koya (Koyasan) is one of the most sacred places in Japan—home to Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, founded over 1,200 years ago by the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai).
Surrounded by forested peaks and steeped in ritual and silence, Koyasan is a place of deep reflection—not only for Buddhists, but for all who seek stillness, beauty, and meaning.
In 2012, we opened Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU as the first guesthouse in Koyasan.
Our vision was simple: to create a space where modern-day pilgrims and travelers from around the world could stay in comfort—without losing the spirit of this sacred mountain.
KOKUU means "vast empty space" in Buddhism. But this emptiness is not void—it is potential.
Our capsule-style rooms are minimalist yet warm, designed to give you rest, privacy, and quiet moments to reconnect—with yourself, with nature, and with this very special place.
Guests often describe KOKUU as calm, cozy, and perfectly located—just a short walk from Okunoin Cemetery, morning prayers, and the many temples of Koyasan.
Whether you're joining a fire ritual, wandering lantern-lit paths, or simply enjoying our homemade curry or peaceful music lounge, we hope KOKUU becomes your home on the mountain.
We’re always happy to share local tips, walking routes, and spiritual highlights.
More than anything, we want your stay in Koyasan to be peaceful, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Hi, I’m Ryochi, your host and founder of Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU.
Born into a family of Shingon monks, I created KOKUU in 2012 to be more than just a place to sleep. It’s a peaceful base for reflection, connection, and deep rest—set right beside Koyasan’s magical, lantern-lit Okunoin cemetery.
Guests call KOKUU “relaxed,” “cozy,” “amazing,” and “perfectly located.”
From minimalist capsule-style pods and delicious curry dinners, to warm conversations and early-morning prayer walks, everything here is designed to help you slow down and truly feel Koyasan.
I love music, hiking, and sharing this sacred place with guests from around the world. Whether you’re here for silence or stories, I’ll do my best to make your stay unforgettable.
KOKUU is simple, but full of soul. Just like Koyasan.
